Tour Detail Information

Enjoy an adventurous mountain gorilla trekking experience and wildlife viewing while on a 6-day Rwanda Wildlife and Gorilla Safari. This safari takes you into exploring two national parks, including Volcanoes National Park, which is known as home to endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Volcanoes National Park is the only spot in Rwanda where gorilla trekking safaris take place due to the fact that it is home to a sizeable number of the remaining gorillas in the world, second only to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with the largest population of mountain gorillas in the wild. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is very rewarding due to the dramatic nature of the park, which is slightly easy to trek through while on the lookout for habituated mountain gorillas in the wild. Visit Akagera National Park, another magnificent national park to visit while on this 6-day Rwanda gorilla and wildlife safaris.

Day: 2

After breakfast, we take the Kigali city tour visiting key areas like Genocide Memorial, craft centers, Kandt National Museum, etc. You can choose which sites to visit because, in the afternoon, we journey to Akagera National Park after having lunch in the city. Akagera National Park is located in eastern Rwanda; our journey will be about 2 hours, arriving late in the afternoon and continuing to the lodge for check-in. Day: 3

We arise early and leave right after breakfast to explore Akagera national park in search of big mammals like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, several antelope species, and recently re-introduced lions. Most of the game drives happen in the northern part of the park, where we will spend the better part of the day and return to the lodge later that afternoon. Akagera National Park is the biggest in Rwanda, with beautiful scenery and landscape. It has varied habitats for wildlife and is a birder’s haven, with over 500 species in the park. There are also opportunities to explore the park on foot with a ranger by taking a nature walk, this can be incorporated on request, especially in the afternoon. You have the option of a boat safari on Lake Ihema to watch hippos and crocodiles in the water or by the shores. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Accommodation: Akagera Rhino Lodge

Day: 4

After breakfast, we relive the great wildlife safari experience in Akagera National Park before transferring to Volcano National Park, where the massive gentle giants inhabit. It is a natural habitat for the mountain gorillas, providing the perfect environment and food for the gorillas. Volcanoes National Park is located in northern Rwanda, about 2 hours from Kigali in Kinigi, Musanze. The drive from Akagera National Park to Musanze will be through Kigali city, enjoying several villages with great landscape views. You can ask the driver to stop for picture moments at different viewpoints as you see the endless hills and understand why indeed Rwanda is referred to as ‘the land of a thousand hills. We will arrive at the lodge later that evening, ready for the gorilla hike the next day. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Isange Paradise Resort

Day: 7

After a good restful night, your whole agenda today is tied to meeting the mountain gorillas in the lush and dense jungles of the Virunga ranges—precisely the Volcanoes National Park. Your driver-guide will transfer you to the briefing place right after your early breakfast to listen to the ranger guide on how to behave while in the park and divide you into the different gorilla groups. In the meantime, as you wait for the briefing, enjoy the Rwandan cultural dances and the freshly brewed Rwandan coffee. After a briefing at the visitor center, you embark on the trek that will eventually bring you to the gorillas in their natural habitat. The trek can last from an hour to several hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night. You need to be relatively fit to enjoy this experience. Depending on how long the gorilla tracking lasts, you have the opportunity to visit the Gorilla Guardians village and Ibiwachu Cultural Village for a taste of Rwandan culture. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Isange Paradise Resort

Day: 8

On this day, have an early morning breakfast drive to the park offices for the briefing, and head for Diane Fossy’s monumental area, where you will explore and learn about her endeavors to start the conservation journey of mountain gorillas before she was killed by poachers. Later, we will start the journey to Kigali for your return flight or hotel. Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch

Day: 9

Bwindi impenetrable national park requires hiking; you should pace yourself and drink plenty of water. Eating, drinking, and smoking near the gorillas are forbidden. Your ranger guide will communicate the designated time and place for such. We encourage you to carry a rain poncho Waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. Gardening gloves for protection against stinging plants Long trousers and long-sleeved sweaters or shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings. Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash Porters are available to help you carry your day pack for a minimum fee of $20 or UGX 50,000

Day: 10

Gorilla trekking is dependent on the availability of permits at the time of your booking. Gorilla permits in all the national parks of Uganda and Rwanda are in high demand; we advise that you book your tour well in advance to avoid disappointment. If gorilla permits are not available for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it’s possible to see the mountain gorillas at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which is 7 kilometres from the town of Kisoro in Uganda.
